Central London ground to a halt last night for the opening of Kim Kardashian’s new Skims store, though you would have thought it was a K-pop concert. The surrounding roads were closed, and hundreds of people crowded behind barriers, screaming their idol’s name. Inside the store’s plump-walled atrium, senior members of the British fashion industry, usually unflappable in the presence of celebrities, were losing their cool at the prospect of seeing Kim somewhere as pedestrian as Regent Street. They waited with visible nerves until she appeared before a monumental nude sculpture. As Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Chris Appleton tended to her look, she offered a “Hi guys”, then headed outside into a storm of camera flashes to greet her public. Across town, a very different scene was playing out in a gauzily draped vestibule inside St Cuthbert’s Church, where young designer Paolo Carzana was conjuring a space of total serenity from calico dyed with wine tannins. “The show represents a baptism of the label,” he said, sending out a slow parade of bias-cut dresses with cascades of raw-edged ruffles spiralling around the body. “I believe creativity is the highest and most valuable tool today, and it succeeds and transcends money and power.” Only at fashion week could spectacle and sanctuary sit on the same evening’s schedule.
