The first copies of our August issue landed on my desk in the midst of an absurdly busy week. Between the fun and games at Wimbledon in London (more about that later), the high drama of couture week in Paris, and the rollercoaster that is this year’s World Cup, it’s almost impossible not to break out in anxiety sweats.
I am personally somewhat breathless with excitement at the prospect of a win this weekend, as England face Norway in the quarter-finals. That said, Norway’s striker Erling Haaland has emerged as a bit of a fan favourite in the Vogue office, thanks to both his social media presence and his “gym” bags (which are typically Birkins). Happily he also plays for Man City, so at least I can claim him as our king of the North after the tournament. Plus he’s practically best mates with our very own golden boy, Jude Bellingham. Name a more dynamic duo…

Daisy Edgar-Jones is this month’s British Vogue cover star, though to be honest the image looks more like a 19th-century painting than anything else – which is precisely the point. The shoot was a celebration of the actor’s highly-anticipated upcoming turn as Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, a starring role that will cement her place in the pantheon of Austenian leading ladies.
It’s Daisy’s first cover moment with British Vogue and it was lovely to see her wrap her arms around the project with such enthusiasm. It was her genius idea to collaborate with Szilveszter Makó, whose whimsical photography really lends itself to her new era as a period drama queen. Watching him work alongside Tabitha Simmons – brilliant stylist and longtime contributing editor – was a real treat. Makó is as fastidious as they come – the fitting images he created in preparation for the shoot with Tabitha were almost like paper dolls come to life, delightful works of art in and of themselves.

For the interview, British Vogue’s film and culture editor Radhika Seth sat down with the actor in a ceramics studio in east London – also Daisy’s suggestion. (To hear Radhika tell it, Daisy is a low-key whizz on the potter’s wheel.) In their conversation, Daisy talks about what it means to take on the biggest role of her career so far, but also opens up about the creative connection she shares with her photographer boyfriend, Ben Seed, and the struggles she’s had with endometriosis. Her candour on the topic is honestly stirring.

I am no tennis expert, but I will say that of all the Grand Slams, Wimbledon has to be the most stylish. Ok maybe I’m a bit biased, but let’s be real: it’s easily the best-dressed crowd by a mile. I felt quite at home (smug even?) in my white linen Ralph Lauren three-piece suit. Luckily my seat mate this year, Tom Hiddleston, is a tennis expert, so I got a bit of a cheat sheet last Saturday as I watched talented young newbie, Alexandra Eala, take on reigning champ Iga Świątek on Centre Court. Earlier, we’d enjoyed a delicious lunch with Ralph Lauren, hosted by my boss Anna Wintour, my GQ colleagues Adam Baidawi and Murray Clark, and yours truly. It turns out there are many not-so-secret tennis fans in Hollywood besides Hiddleston: Michaela Coel, Emma Corrin, Simone Ashley and Sienna Miller all came out for the day. If my face looks slightly anguished in the shots in the stands, it’s because the match could not have been more nail-biting. Nobody loves an underdog like the Brits, so it was especially sweet to see rising Filipina star Eala triumph. Her emotional speech about the win left many in the crowd (okay, me) teary-eyed.

Couture fashion week is always my favourite for celebrity sightings, because someone fabulous tends to swoop in and steal the moment when you’re least expecting it. This season that someone was Alexa Demie. I didn’t much care for Euphoria season 3, but I was absolutely spellbound by Demie and the endless stream of banging early noughties looks she wore on the show. If I’m honest, her wardrobe may have been the sole reason I kept watching.
In real life, the Euphoria star has a mystique about her that can only be described as bewitching. Outside of press tours, she’s rarely seen. But when she does show up, she shows out. Even in the simplest slinky little black dress, Demie caught my attention on the front row at Chanel. I also love that her favourite outfit from the show was the wedding look (same, same!). It’s an outfit I can imagine her wearing while just casually swanning down Rodeo Drive. On the topic of casually swanning, Emma Corrin wins for most epic couture street-style moment of the week in a rainbow of Schiaparelli feathers and strategically placed antler horns.
