Since the moment I arrived on Monday night, sparks have been flying at Paris Fashion Week. First off, the late September heatwave has show-goers sweating profusely in their jackets. (Although Rihanna somehow managed to keep her cool on the front row at Dior in a new season look from the house). Anthony Vaccarello traditionally uses a twinkling Eiffel Tower as a backdrop at Saint Laurent, and this season he dialled that idea up to the absolute max. Solid gold, quite literally. And we’re still only half way through the week…

It’s really tough to upstage the Eiffel Tower, especially at night, but that’s exactly what Anthony Vaccarello managed to do with his Saint Laurent show on Tuesday night. The scene was like something out of Phantom of the Opera: a series of gigantic gold chandeliers that appeared to be suspended in thin air. Rendered almost entirely in gold, the collection was as opulent as it gets. Vaccarello always assembles an A-list front row – the likes of Kate and Lila Moss were there – but this time he had his famously stylish friend Charlotte Gainsbourg serenade the audience dressed in a perfectly tailored Le Smoking tux as he took his bow, visibly moved to tears. A touching ending to an emotionally charged show.

And the Prize for Best Invite of the Week Goes To…

… Dior! Never heard of the Chinese tradition of hand-rolling walnuts? Neither had I. They come as a pair, and you rotate them around one another in the palm of your hand – the idea being that, over time, they become almost entirely smooth. Think of them as the most exquisite stress balls ever. A highly considered touch, and further proof that Jonathan Anderson is an out-of-the-box thinker.

Ever since a Mrs Prada quote from an old interview resurfaced – “for me a skirt is like a T-shirt” – it feels like runways have been answering the call. (Right after the Prada show, searches for the brand’s skirts rose exponentially on eBay, so it seems everyone has gotten the memo). It’s tough to pick favourites, but I loved the parade of skirts at Dries Van Noten. They came in gorgeous sherbet shades and were finished with handfuls of quirky embellishments. A fashion magpie’s dream.
