I’ve spent the past week between London and New York, so this newsletter straddles two cities. In NY: a trip to the Guggenheim uptown, and lunch downtown with dear friend, and former Vogue colleague, Liana Satenstein. I made it back to London in time for the stunning Hunter’s Moon over the weekend, one that is apparently shifting the entire lunar landscape. If you’re feeling a little shook this week, you can apparently blame it on the gazillion planets that are currently retrograding, too. We’re in for a cosmically charged few months, friends! And something pretty magical did happen on Monday night: I was awarded an honorary degree from Ravensbourne University! You can call me Dr Nnadi from now on…

The Doctor Will See You Now
|
If you’re the child of an African parent like me, then you will know that being a doctor is a big deal. True story: my first work experience placement was at St Mary’s Hospital, something I really only did to please my Nigerian father. So being awarded an honorary doctorate by Ravensbourne University this past week was a pretty special moment. My mum, bless her, was at the ceremony despite having just had knee surgery. I really wasn’t sure what to wear under those big old robes, but this lovely Erdem dress ended up being just the thing – especially with some sparkly Manolos. And who knew I was a hat person?

You might be familiar with Liana Satenstein from her hilarious live shopping series, Neverworns. I also happen to have been Liana’s first boss back when she worked at Vogue.com. She’s someone who thinks and talks a mile a minute, so unpacking her kooky ideas about fashion each season is always a delight. Last week, over lunch at Dimes Deli, she told me about her latest project Oksana Worns, a new line of ’90s-inspired tees. She was wearing the tangerine-dream version of her already popular Clasp top, and I have to say I’m now pretty much sold on it.

Taryn Simon at the Guggenheim
|
Whenever I’m in New York, I always try to squeeze in a good cultural excursion. On this trip I was lucky enough to have the artist Taryn Simon give me and my US colleague Chloe Schama a personal walk-through of Father Country I Do Love You, her mindblowing show at the Guggenheim. The exhibit offers both a personal tribute to her father’s life and sweeping social commentary on recent American history, told through the lens of one FBI agent’s career. It’s one of the most fascinating works I’ve ever seen, and having Taryn talk us through her show – which was 10 years in the making! – was such a special treat. I’ll definitely be revisiting it next time I’m in town.
