While I travel more than most people but not as much as many people, I’ve definitely spent an inordinate amount of time figuring out my airplane wardrobe. I love my plane clothes, probably because they are derived from a specific formula. My plane outfit — which I'm wearing right now, on a plane, while writing this — can be dressed up or dressed down, depending on whether you are traveling for business or pleasure. First, you need a good grey or navy cashmere sweater. I typically go with grey. If you are a color person, just do what feels right! If you know me you know where my sweaters are from, but please go ahead and buy yours at Uniqlo. Next up is a pair of grey or navy bottoms. My go-to is once again grey, and pull-on. You can do very casual here or opt for something more trouser-like. (Everyone from Everlane to Ami sells wool trousers with elastic bands.) My standbys are techno-tweed sweats from Outdoor Voices' collaboration with A.P.C. (You might be able to find them on a resale site.) For sneakers, wear something extremely clean if you are going straight to a meeting. If you work in an industry where sneakers do not fly, even for meetings straight off of a plane, I would definitely pack a pair of Chelsea boots in your carry-on bag. If you are straight-up on vacation or you work in a VERY creative industry, a full-blown sweatsuit is totally appropriate and a great choice. Raey does an oversize, fancy cashmere-blend version for ladies and gentlemen. (My friend Tilly enjoys it a lot.) Entireworld makes theirs in sun-washed, early-1980s colors enjoyed by dads and Old Millennials alike. Finally, no matter where you’re going, top everything off with a more formal coat or blazer. Surprise: I prefer black or navy. (Again, if you like color and print, by all means integrate that here.) A trench, like the A.P.C. one pictured, works, too, but can get a bit wrinkly if you keep it on in coach. (IMO, the best thing about getting upgraded is the opportunity to hang your coat for the duration of the flight.) And if you wear jewelry, wear it on the plane. I've tangled too many necklaces stuffing them into a little felt bag in my suitcase. Finally, a printed scarf never hurt anyone. So. A cashmere sweater + stretchy bottom + clean sneaker + sharp blazer = a failsafe travel uniform for any and all. Happy trails in 2019.
